Eww... Credit Card Debt

Eww... Credit Card Debt Credit Card Debt.   Gross.   This is not a fun topic, but it is one that many of us face being in our twenties and beyond. Some of us may have discovered a credit card in college (and credit card debt shortly thereafter).   The high of having your own credit card(s) seemed euphoric at first, and you promised yourself you’d pay it off as soon as you landed that great job, but whoa- 3 years later that balance just keeps on growing… Some used a credit card to help float them through a period of unemployment, or move to a new city.   Others figured they’d only use their credit card to furnish their lowly first apartment because: “It is zero percent for 6 months!”   (“Um oops, its been 6 months already?!”)   Before you know it, your car was vandalized again, you had unexpected medical credit card debts to pay, parking ticket debts etc and the emergency credit card was there for you. via http://401kcalculator.org/ Like a drug, over time you needed just a little more to get that same euphoria.   So naturally,   this turned into keeping up with friends in the city: buying stylish clothes, going to dinners at trendy new restaurants with friends, weekly mani’s/pedis, bar tabs, tanning, going out 3 times a week, daily lattes, cabs, going out to lunch almost daily, and never denying yourself something you wanted at that moment because “you deserve it!”   Ok, so you work hard, and one day you will get the pay you “deserve,” but what’s really going on behind these spending binges? As someone who has fallen into the credit card trap, here’s what I think young women struggle with… We are too impulsive.  We mistake having a bad week at work, a bad boss/boyfriend/friend/relative, or feeling blue as code for:  â€œYou deserve it, who cares how much it costs!” You can justify a need for just about anything to yourself, even though none of it is rooted in truth. Boredom.   (i.e. “I’m really sick of that suit/staying in/my hair color/that old TV so I will buy a new one.) You want it all NOW. You want to show an outward appearance of success, independence and happiness, even if your salary is modest. Having nice things “motivates you” to do well and work hard.   (Danger Zone!) Fear and avoidance of facing the amount of debt you have, therefore not making a plan to get rid of it. You’re living a very unrealistic lifestyle:   It might be time to admit that you are not a celebrity. You feel like you need to have the life your parents have, even though you are half their age. Does this resonate with anyone?!   More on this later, but obviously there is something bigger going on here behind a high credit card balance!

Update on the list of best and worst professions

Update on the list of best and worst professions Theres disconcerting news in CareerJournal today. They list the top ten professions, using generally the same criteria that Salary.com used to come up with its list of the ten best professions. And the only professions that are (only sort of) on both lists are: analyst and social worker/psychologist. Analyst is such a broad term that it is almost useless, but it is conveniently something that requires almost the complete opposite skills as social worker/psychologist. So at least most personality types have an opportunity here. Maybe the only really actionable advice on this topic comes from what has become one of my favorite sources for career advice, New York Magazine. Heres a quote from a funny and informed lecture on happiness by Ben Mathis-Lilley: Dont go to law school. Lawyers are 3.6 times more likely to be depressed than members of other professions, and its not just because their jobs are more stressful. For most people, job stress has little effect on happiness unless it is accompanied by a lack of control (lawyers, of course, have clients to listen to) or involves taking something away from somebody else (a common feature of the legal system). That advice is not just for lawyers, its for everyone. Even if you cant be an analyst or psychologist, at least get a job where you have control over your work. What is control? For some people, itll mean working for yourself. But you can have control working for other people, too. I asked David Blanchflower, professor at Dartmouth College who is known for slicing data to create happiness equations, What does having control over ones work really mean? He said that control goes beyond just workload and pace. People dont like to feel theres a risk of being fired. They like control over what they wear, they want access to the heat control. Surprisingly, in study after study, women report more job satisfaction than men do. So maybe the biggest factor in whether or not you feel like you have control over your work is not whether youre in a best profession but whether or not youre a woman.

Accessories Matter in Personal Branding - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Accessories Matter in Personal Branding - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Over the past week, as my smartphone  slowly turned into an expensive digital clock, I was forced to think about what cell phone I wanted next and what my choice would say about me. When I came back to the US several years ago, I was forced into buying a smartphone.   Before, since Id been traveling so much, Id used  a prepaid basic phone where I could easily switch SIM cards for whatever country I was in at the time.  But then I came back to the US and started looking for jobs in social media   where  every interviewer judges you on your answer to the question: What smartphone do you have? So, while fixing my resume and updating my internet presence, I also spent a significant amount of time deciding what type of phone fit the brand I wanted to project. As a result, I ended up with the original Motorola Droid trendy then because it used the brand-new Android operating system.   (And a better choice for me personally because ATT was not reliable in my area at that time.) My cell phone was not the only accessory where Id had to consider my personal brand while Ive been shopping.   More recently, when I bought a new pair of glasses, I spent a lot of time deciding what each frame said about me professionally as I tried them on.   I work in innovation, so  the standard  wire frames were out. Instead I needed plastic frames with a quirky look to them and found the look I wanted in a pair of  black frames with blue siding that peek out unexpectedly when you look at me from an angle. (Even my glasses reward people for looking at things differently! Perfect!) Branding through accessorizing also comes through at my company,  Ideas To Go.   We work with Fortune 500 companies, but  we  very deliberately do not dress up on the days when we  have ideation projects in our office. No suit jackets, ties,  nylons or high heels on those days.   Instead, we  wear colorful, fun accessories and clothes that look comfortable. (While still professional.) This is a very deliberate branding decision on our part, because we are signalling to our clients that Ideas To Go is a place where they can be comfortable expressing themselves. Its hard to feel  unrestricted when youre wearing a tie around your neck or nylons! So by deliberately wearing more casual clothing and keeping our accessories bold and colorful, we signal to our clients that they too should be more casual and relaxed. (It works: many of our clients show up the next day wearing a completely different style of clothing than they did for the Kickoff!) So, as I researched a new phone, it was a loaded decision for me.  What phone will not only meet my needs, but signal to the people I meet at conferences that I am up-to-date with the innovation thats happening in the smartphone world?   What type of phone signals that Im creative, and the type of person they want to work with?   Its a loaded decision especially as Ill be using this phone for the next couple years! How have you faced situations like this before? What unusual  choices have you made about accessories based on your personal brand? Author: Katie Konrath  blogs about creativity, innovation and “ideas so fresh… they should be slapped” at  www.getfreshminds.com.   She works for leading innovation company,  Ideas To Go.

Reducing Your Chances of Experiencing Injury in the Workplace

Reducing Your Chances of Experiencing Injury in the Workplace Picture Credit The majority of the time, when we think about work, illness and injury really aren’t the first thing to pass through our mind. But if you experience either of these conditions in the workplace, or your workplace puts you at risk of them, you may have issues on your hands. But not to worry. Here are just a few steps that you can take in order to reduce your chances of having to deal with injury or illness in the workplace! The Law When you become an employee, your employee automatically assumes a position of authority and responsibility over you. It is their job to ensure that you are provided with a safe space to work within and that you have the correct knowledge and equipment to carry out the tasks expected of you in a safe and sensible manner. If your employer falls short in providing any of these things, you may experience a form of injury or you may develop an illness as a direct result of their negligence or malpractice. It is extremely important that you get in touch with an injury lawyer if you find yourself in this situation. This professional will be able to survey what has happened and can help to build a case that can be taken to court. This case could provide you with compensation, which can be put towards medical bills or which can replace lost earnings. It also helps to benefit you in the future, as your employer is likely to put wrongs to rights and meet their responsibilities from this point onwards. Responsibility Over Yourself While your employer does have responsibility over your health, safety, and wellbeing in the workplace, there are further steps that you can take to improve your chances of remaining safe and well at work. Ergonomic Equipment There are various different forms of ergonomic equipment available on the market that can help to improve your posture and positioning while carrying out routine tasks. Investing in these and using them can significantly reduce your chances of developing problems such as repetitive strain injury. So, browse what’s out there! Speak to Your Employer About Mental Illness Not all illnesses are visible. If you suffer from mental illness, your employer will be able to provide you with support and may be able to make your workplace and role more accommodating for you. However, they can’t do anything if they are unaware of your condition. So, feel free to speak to your employer about your individual situation and experiences or diagnoses and they will be able to prevent your condition from worsening as a direct result of work. These are just a few different steps to take into consideration. But implementing them into your working routine can significantly improve your quality of life!
